Recently, Google, along with other tech giants, have been under fire for not respecting their users’ privacy and capitalizing on their personal information. In fact, Google’s policies that are being criticized (such as cookies to track the activity of their userbase) have existed for a long time, but the society has simply become more aware and knowledgeable about these issues in recent years.

Allegedly in response to these criticisms, Google has announced that they will no longer track people’s activities using cookies and sell them to third-party companies. In their explanation, Google has stated that this decision was made to respect people’s privacy. However, this seems nothing more than a publicity stunt. First, they will stop tracking third-party cookies only for their browser, Chrome. This means any app that you use (Youtube, Google) or any Google-owned website (Google.com, Youtube.com) will still be able to track your activity, so they have not much to lose. Secondly, it seems as though it was done because Apple has announced that their phones will ask the users when their personal information is at risk.

In short, be very cautious still and not hail the corporations.
